Days after the massive earthquake and tsunami that shook Chile, the country faces a new battle: looters. As the death toll in the city rises to over 700, the police struggled to maintain control over the city as looters take over the city.
Chilean President Michelle Bachelet promised citizens that provisions for food, water and shelter are being made as fast as possible. She describes the earthquake and it’s aftermath as an “emergency without parallel in Chile’s history”.
Although the death toll stands at around 700 presently, the number of missing is steadily increasing. The number of dead can be expected to rise in the next few days and weeks as search and rescue efforts continue.
The magnitude 8.8 earthquake struck in the city of Concepcion, Chile and raised tsunami warnings in 53 countries including Hawaii, the Phiippines and Japan.
